The Benmore Dam was built in the early 1960s. All previous spherical roller bearings were replaced by eight plain bearings with ELGOGLIDE® coating in 2007.
The Benmore Dam is one of several dams along the Waitaki River in which the bearing supports are to be replaced during the next few years.
There are several reasons for replacing these bearings. Plain bearings from the INA brand have high load ratings, which is particularly important in New Zealand. Earthquakes often occur here, which cause a rapid increase in loads. Bearing fractures in this case would have catastrophic consequences.
The segment gates can be opened and closed under the most challenging of conditions thanks to the low frictional values of our plain bearings. This significantly increases the safety.
