Innovation and Thinking Outside the Box

As a forward-looking company, we invest a great deal in research and development.

This is a very conscious decision on our part, since two ingenious ideas came into being at the beginning of INA and FAG’s success story. By inventing the ball grinding machine in 1883, Friedrich Fischer became a pioneer and founder of the rolling bearing industry. Dr. Georg Schaeffler made an industrial breakthrough with the development of the needle-roller assembly in 1949.

To this day, the engineers at INA and FAG excel at creative engineering that often involves an unconventional approach. This means questioning established conventions, following unusual paths, and daring to use other perspectives. All of these are the prerequisites for realizing new and remarkable ideas.

Our employees are working on progressive products and technologies in modern research and development centers worldwide. In these centers, new, state-of-the-art and efficient solutions are constantly being developed in close cooperation with customers from the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, and aerospace.

Materials development and tribology are key areas in the product development process. We use tools such as simulation and rapid prototyping for developing increasingly complex products that involve mechatronics. From individual bearing systems to complete vehicles, all the necessary tests can be carried out on test stands. This means we can increase the operating safety of our products and gain valuable insights for developing and improving our products.

Our customers receive products that have great benefits. This means that, for example, by using our coatings developed in-house, the operating life of bearings can be increased considerably. Not only the bearing itself is integrated into the module, but also measuring technology and drives and controls, and calculating programs developed in-house enable our engineers to design complete transmission systems and the required bearing supports directly at the customer’s premises – worldwide.

A prerequisite for innovation is the regular, personal exchange of knowledge and experiences. The FAG Innovation Award, worth €20,000, is awarded annually in order to promote talent. The Schaeffler Group devotes particular attention to the creativity of employees. Our Employee Suggestion Program is recognized as one of the best in Germany.
